dbx Introduces the PS6 Power Supply for its PMC16 Personal Monitor Controller

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – HARMAN’s dbx today introduced its PS6 power supply for the dbx PMC16 Personal Monitor Controller. The PS6 is a road-worthy power supply that can supply AC power for up to six separate PMC16 units. The PMC16 is ideal for everything from house of worship systems with a single compact mixing console to large-scale orchestra installations of up to 60 PMC16 units.

The dbx PMC16 Personal Monitor Controller is remote control designed to give performers the ability to set up and control their own personal mixes of up to 16 channels of audio. Each channel can be tweaked with EQ, panning, Stereo Width control and effects, including a choice of built-in Lexicon reverbs. The PMC16 can be used with traditional on-stage monitor systems, powered personal monitors, in-ear monitors, digital snakes and headphones.

“Since it began shipping our PMC16 has been met with wide acclaim from users from a variety of backgrounds. We designed a high-quality multi-power supply that provides users with a functional and flexible option that will allow them the ability to have a highly scalable setup as they add additional PMC16s,” stated Noel Larson, Market Manager for Portable PA, Tour and Recording at HARMAN Signal Processing.

The dbx PS6 connects to a PMC16 Personal Monitor Controller via a standard 12-volt DC center-negative cable. The PMC can be configured to operate with either 48kHz or 96kHz D/A conversion. Its built-in dbx PeakStop™ limiting prevents the possibility of signal overload. The PMC16 is future-ready, thanks to its USB port, DSC and Ethernet port for future updates.

The dbx PS6 power supply will be available in April 2013 at a price of $299.95.

Sound Image Outfits House of Blues Las Vegas With JBL VTX Line Arrays

NORTHRIDGE, California – The House of Blues Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay hotel is one of Las Vegas’ premier concert venues—and it just upped the ante with the installation of HARMAN’s JBL VTX Series line array. The House of Blues hosts major touring acts and will be home to a 2-year residency by Carlos Santana, performing his “Greatest Hits Live: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” through 2014. Sound Image of Escondido, California, designed and installed the JBL VTX system under the direction of Jason Schmidlapp, with support from Dave Kaiser of Sound Marketing West, HARMAN Professional’s regional sales rep firm.

The system includes two 13-box hangs of 10 VTX 25 line arrays and three VerTec® VT4880A fullsize arrayable subwoofers on each side of the stage, complemented by six ASB7128 subwoofers under the stage and six VerTec VT4886 subcompact line array elements for upper balcony fill. In addition, a JBL AC18 compact 2-way loudspeaker and ASB6112 compact 12-inch subwoofer are installed in each of the VIP suites.

“The House of Blues Las Vegas had gotten to the point where it really needed to upgrade its sound system,” said Dan Schartoff, VP of Production for House of Blues Entertainment. “The VTX boxes were a bit larger than the previous system so the suspension points had to change, and we also had to work around the room’s upper balcony. We had to move the array stacks slightly upstage and offstage to keep the sight lines to the stage clear. As it turned out, this enabled us to give patrons a better view of the stage since previously some of the speakers were stacked on the stage underneath the flown speakers. The better, more focused coverage of the VTX line arrays enabled us to eliminate the on-stage speakers while delivering much better sound.”

The upper balcony was a large hurdle to overcome, Schartoff noted. “The two array hangs are fairly close to the balcony, so we decided to install the subwoofers in the middle of both arrays. Six VTX V25 provide balcony coverage with three VT4880A flown in the middle of the array and four V25 for floor coverage,” he said. “The 13-box arrays were carefully designed to fit the available space and the bottom V25 enclosure of the balcony section is at the same elevation as the first row of the balcony, providing excellent off-axis coverage. The subwoofers are in the middle and close to the balcony surfaces, which helps to reduce reflections while at the same time allowing for improved under-balcony penetration since the lower V25 enclosures have line of sight coverage to the back of the room.”

The loudspeakers are powered by Crown IT 12000HD and XTi Series amplifiers. Loudspeaker management is performed via dbx DriveRack® 4800 speaker management systems. A Soundcraft Vi1 digital live sound console handles some front-of-house mixing duties. “We used HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ software to do the setup and installation,” said Schmidlapp, “which really streamlined the whole process.”

“We were eager to do an installation with the new VTX line arrays as soon as we’d heard about them, and we bid on the House of Blues job, which would give us a great setting as a showcase room,” Schmidlapp noted. “If you’re going to go big, what better place to go big than Las Vegas? At the same time we were contracted to do the install, Carlos Santana was looking for someplace with a younger, hip clientele for his upcoming residency and chose the House of Blues. The timing wound up being perfect for us.”

The installation makes Sound Image the first company to install a JBL VTX system. “What a perfect deal—now, Santana is being showcased with the newest pro rig on the market,” Schmidlapp said. “I think Santana’s pretty impressed with it. Wait until you hear it!”

“Carlos Santana performing through a VTX line array system at the House of Blues Las Vegas is a match made in heaven,” said Paul Bauman, Senior Manager, Tour Sound for JBL Professional, who was instrumental in providing onsite support during the installation. “This project was truly a team effort under the guidance of Dan Schartoff and his team at Live Nation, coupled with Sound Image’s expert design and implementation and outstanding support from Sound Marketing West.”

“I can honestly say JBL hit the nail on the head with VTX—I can’t say enough about how good this box sounds,” said Rob Mailman, Touring Operations Manager for Sound Image and FOH engineer for Santana. “It is very transparent, solid throughout all bands and does really well not leaving me fatigued at the end of a long and loud show.”

dbx Components Help Enable Phillip Freeman Realize His Musical Aspirations

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – When musician and composer Phillip Freeman first received the e-mail telling him he would be receiving free gear from HARMAN’s dbx on Facebook he didn’t believe it. “I had never won anything before in my life,” stated Freeman. A user of the dbx 266XS compressor for his home recording studio, Freeman had been posting about how much he liked it on the dbx Facebook page. Once annually, dbx picks from the comments on its Facebook page and selects a “Friend in Need” and awards them a prize – in Freeman’s case a dbx 231S dual-channel 31-band equalizer and a 286S microphone preamp/processor. Freeman was chosen based on his compelling story and loyalty to all of the HARMAN brands.

Freeman might value his home recording setup more than most. The 63-year-old Freeman is disabled as a result of complications from Type II diabetes and can’t get out of his home very often. “I am literally at home all the time, every day, and I spend every day in my recording studio.”

The Bakersfield, California musician knew what he wanted to be from an early age. “I started playing guitar at age seven and it’s been my life ever since.” Freeman soon took up keyboards and bass, which became his primary instrument. “I was on the bill with dozens of top country, rock and pop artists. I made a few records and until 1990 playing music was all I ever did,” added Freeman.

“I got off the road when I got married but the need to make music never left me. About five years ago I put together a home studio with about the least I could get away with in gear – but it was enough for me to start recording and creating my own music again. A few years ago the effects of my diabetes got much worse, affecting my ability to walk so severely that I became permanently disabled. My home studio became much more than a hobby – it became a release, a solace, and enabled my to keep making music even though I couldn’t go out and play live anymore.”

Freeman started upgrading his recording setup as he could, given his limited budget. “I couldn’t afford a big mixer so I use four little mixers chained together that I bought over time. I bought a drum machine and learned how to program it. My son gave me some gear including two Lexicon MX200 Dual Reverb/Effects Processors, a DigiTech JamMan Solo Looper and the dbx 266XS compressor, so I became more familiar with HARMAN components and how useful they could be for a guy like me in making home recordings. I was so enthusiastic that I started posting on the dbx Facebook page.”

“I was able to make good recordings before, but the dbx 231S and 286S have taken things to a much higher level,” noted Freeman. “ The 286s’s built-in compressor, enhancer and expander/gate allow me to really warm up and tweak each track. I’m using it on instruments as well as vocals – I write a lot of instrumental music and the 286S works really well on instruments as well as vocals, even though it’s known as a mic preamp. I’m particularly impressed on how well it works on electric bass. My tracks now sound like they were done in an expensive pro recording studio.”

The 231S and 286S provide another sonic benefit Freeman would not have guessed at first. “Since I’m recording at home, I have to use small solid-state guitar amps – I can’t crank up big tube amps. I used to get a lot of noise and wasn’t happy with the recorded sound of my amps. Now, with the 231S and 286S, I can boost, clean up and EQ the sound of the amps to where they sound great. That alone is worth every penny. I had never thought about getting a mic preamp before but now, because the quality of the individual tracks is so much better, I find myself having to do a lot less fixing in the final mix.”

“Now that I have them, I don’t see how a recording studio could operate without these components,” Freeman concluded. “They’re especially useful for a home user like me. I can’t explain the joy I get from making music. There are no words to express how happy I am now.”

“dbx is lucky to have so many fans and followers that have supported the brand for over 40 years. Phillip is one of those loyal fans and we are very pleased that we could help him in reaching his goal of improving his studio,” stated Noel Larson, Market Manager, Portable PA, Tour and Recording at HARMAN Signal Processing.

JBL Professional Goes Universal in Sri Lanka

NORTHRIDGE, California – The island of Sri Lanka is probably one of the last places one would expect to find global stars as diverse as Billy Ocean and Olivia Newton John performing—and local production company, Universal Sound fielding a top-spec HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC® line array system.

But that’s precisely what Malinda Lowe’s company has been doing since setting up in 2009. The company recently rigged a JBL VERTEC line array system at the 5,000-capacitySri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Center for R&B singer Ocean’s sold-out show, and later supported two sell-out concerts by the UK/Australian songstress (and Grease star) Olivia Newton-John at the 1,800-capacity Musaeus Auditorium in Colombo.

With a large inventory of JBL VERTEC, VRX and SRX components (powered by a combination of Crown Macro-Tech MA12000i, MA90001 and MA5000i), Lowe’s company is perfectly positioned to handle the sound production for all ABC Radio Network’s international concert promotions (including Billy Ocean) as well as Wizard Entertainment, who promoted Olivia Newton-John.

A HARMAN Professional customer since setting up the company in 2009, Malinda Lowe is used to meeting production companies’ demands based on venue dimensions. “With Billy Ocean they wanted a minimum of six VT4888 each side—but the ceiling height in both cases was extremely low. So I used the VERTEC Line Array Calculator to predict coverage and SPL results for the large audience area and for the selection of correct locations for main hangs and side PA placements and system configuration.”

Instead, he used eight VT4888 midsize line array elements, configured in two main arrays of four per side, with six VT4882 ground-stacked subwoofers processed as an aux-fed mono sub configuration. The system was powered with Crown Macro-Tech amplifiers, processed via a dbx DriveRack 4800.

For the side PA, Universal Sound used four SRX 725/728 loudspeakers with dbx 260 processing and Crown XTi amplification for each side to cover the wide audience area, and for front fills the company used four VT4888’s with dedicated DriveRack 4800 processing and Crown MAi amplification.

For the Olivia Newton-John show, aimed at Colombo’s upmarket set, Universal had to work around the installed system and did not have hanging points or sufficient truss space to fly the VERTEC line arrays. The challenge was that the auditorium comprised a balcony with seating capacity for 700 and ground seating area for a further 1,100.

Since the production team wanted to fly the system to achieve an even coverage, the Line Array Calculator again provided accurate measurements. “We achieved even coverage, obtaining better frequency response and SPL with the VERTEC rig in a ground-stack configuration,” Lowe said. “The Calculator provided the accurate splay angle option for the maximum performance, with six VT4888 for each side ground stacked on a VT Array Frame and two VT4882 ground-stacked subs with aux-fed sub configuration.”

The system was powered by Crown MAi Series 5000, 9000, 12000 and processed using the dbx DriveRack 4800. Front fills comprised four JBL SRX712M’s with dedicated speaker processing on the DriveRack 260, accurately aligned to the main PA.

All amplification used for both productions was configured and monitored via HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™, with remote control.

The result was that both acts’ management, mixing engineers and musicians complimented the production company on the overall system performance, stating how well the VERTEC line arrays covered the rooms with its superior output power.

Said Olivia Newton-John’s FOH engineer, Jonathan Loeser, “I couldn't have done any of this without the system being top notch and accurate. That is very valuable to a touring engineer or production manager.”

All JBL product and local support, is provided by HARMAN Professional dealer Hi Fi Center Colombo.

Matt Sorum's Sonic Secret: dbx Compressors For Drums That Punch Through Any Mix

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Matt Sorum needs little introduction as one of rock’s greatest drummers. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 with Guns N’ Roses, Sorum provided the percussive firepower for many of G N’ R’s most potent tracks. Sorum is also an accomplished producer and owner of Drac Studios in Los Angeles, which is equipped with an impressive array of recording gear, including Sorum’s favorite dynamic duo, the dbx 160A Compressor/Limiter and 162SL Compressor/Limiter with AutoVelocity™.

“I’ve used the dbx 160A since I can remember,” said Sorum. “It’s the workhorse compressor for me – it sounds great on kick, snare, electric bass and vocals. Its sound quality – that classic, even, musical compression we know and love and the fact that it can easily be adjusted from barely-there to a hard ‘squash’ make it perfect for the studio. Also, it’s a really tough piece of gear, specifically built to be roadworthy so I know I can depend on it when I go on tour.”

Sorum has also begun using the dbx 162SL. “I’m finding it to be an amazing stereo compressor,” Sorum continued. “I use it on individual tracks, on a stereo drum bus mix or on an overall mix. It sounds fantastic in all of those applications and its simple control layout makes it easy to dial in a great sound no matter what I’m using it for. Simple, but effective.”

On the road Sorum also likes using his dbx 1074 QuadGate™ Noise Gate with a 162SL to get his distinctively punchy and powerful sound wherever he plays. “Its four channels of noise gating have threshold, depth and release controls on each channel, along with a frequency-selectable filter, which makes the 1074 extremely versatile for getting my tom toms to sound just the way I like them. It’s great for getting my tom toms to cut through a mix, and the sound engineers like the way it keeps the mic feeds clear and clean.”

“There’s nothing else like dbx,” Sorum concluded. “The sound and presence of a dbx compressor is a mainstay in music, just like a Les Paul or Stratocaster. A lot of gear has come and gone but I still swear by my dbx processors.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets — supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG®, Harman Kardon®, Infinity®, JBL®, Lexicon® and Mark Levinson®. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,000 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.3 billion for the twelve months ended March 31, 2012.
